Review of ‘The color of life’ by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius (The ten cent pocket series #72)
CITATION: Haldeman-Julius, E. (1923). The color of life (The ten cent pocket series #72). Girard, Kansas: Haldeman-Julius Company.
Reviewer: Dr William P. Palmer.
Some books amongst the early little blue books or ten cent pocket series were not of standard size (32 or 64 pages long) though this book, ‘The color of life’, written and edited by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius is 128 pages long, but still fits the standard pattern.
‘The color of life’ consists a series of short stories and random thoughts by Emanuel Haldeman-Julius that illustrate the variety of ways in which the characters that he invents view life. His opening story, ‘The ring’, illustrates the harsh reality of Kansas life for the poor, and is perhaps the best short story in the collection. A few, particularly the very short pieces of half a page or less are scarcely worth printing. Several stories seem to echo disguised incidents from his own life as a journalist and editor. For example, several of the stories relate to life as a newspaper editor or journalist or to authorship. Another popular theme is stories about judges, legal matters and prisons. Music, particularly stories concerning the playing of he violin also feature frequently.
The mixture in quality, length and interest makes it difficult to judge the work as a whole, but most readers will find some stories that entertain them.
