I want to qualify my review by noting that it has been some years since I last read this title. My memory might be a little foggy so your mileage may vary with my review.
Mr. Brinkerhoff is quite thorough and detailed in his analysis of the appearance of the Greek goddess Aphrodite (Venus to the Latin world) as the Classical Age gave way to the Hellenistic Age where her sculpted images is concerned.
He covers a wide breadth of sculpture, from small terracottas and souvenir-style marble reproductions to the home altar and full-sized ancient copies that served many purposes. The usual well-known versions of Aphrodite are presented here, such as the Venus de Milo and the Medici Venus. Others that are now less well-known are presented as well.
The title is somewhat older now, but the information and illustrations within it are still a valuable reference for students and researchers. It is also among the small number of useful titles about Aphrodite and her sculpted representations.
