Told from the perspective of a young boy whose father is serving in the military and whose mother works a dangerous job in a munitions factory, this book highlights the pain and apparent pointlessness of war.  John tries to do his part---staying brave, working hard at home and school, and trying to harden his heart against the German boys and girls who are doing the same. Surrounded by chaos, fear, and rumors, John tries to come to grips with the point of it all. Set in World War 1, the "war to end all wars", there is a particular poignancy in know that there are so many more wars to come.

A short read that would be an excellent selection for middle school age readers.
