Samenvatting:
Some two and one-half times as many soldiers were subjected to the hunger, disease and despair of the prison camps of North and South as were exposed to the deadly fire of the guns at Gettysburg. Those camps killed nearly ten times as many men as died on that battlefield. John L. Ransom, a Brigade Quartermaster of the Ninth Michigan Cavalry, was just twenty when he was captured and made a prisoner of war in November, 1863. Surrounded by death, disease and the harshest cruelty, Ransom kept his spirits and courage up to survive and write this compelling true account.
