Adel, a Palestinian man replying to surprised Palestinian Muppet Haneen on Israeli and Palestinian Sesame Street after Haneen learns that Israeli Muppet Dafi eats these same foods End Table In 1998, Israeli and Palestinian versions of Sesame Street were first broadcast in an attempt to build peace between and among Israeli and Palestinian children. Combining "edutainment," or education and entertainment, and children's television genres, these programs aimed to convey a message like Haneen's lesson above, as part of a larger genre of Peace Communication (PeaceComm) campaigns. The series targeted negative inter- "group" attitudes and stereotypes to promote inter-"group" friendships that might build peace. Popular, policy, and, in part, scholarly assumptions about this Sesame Street version argued that if the series raised awareness about commonalities shared by Israelis and Palestinians-like that they eat the same foods-a base would be established for the audiences to become friends. That base, according to such exaggerated assumptions, would help resolve the political conflict dividing the two societies"--
